Transmissions

GT-SUITE is the ideal tool for evaluating transmission component and system design and controls.

Solution Overview

Accurate Powertrain Predictions

GT-SUITE allows complete transmission system simulation, including shift strategy generation, powerflow specification, thermal warmup and lubrication studies, and shift quality and noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) evaluations.

Through integration with other GT-SUITE libraries, such as engine and vehicle, completely predictive powertrain models can be generated.  Additional modeling detail can be added through the general multibody dynamics GT-SUITE library, which enables evaluation of more detailed component-level behavior, including finite element models.

Transmissions FAQs

Find answers to common questions about transmission modeling, controls integration, thermal analysis, shift quality, and system-level simulation in GT-SUITE.

  • What types of transmissions can GT-SUITE simulate?

GT-SUITE supports the full spectrum of transmission architectures, including automatic (AT), manual (MT), automated manual (AMT), dual-clutch (DCT), continuously variable (CVT), infinitely variable (IVT), and emerging novel concepts. Whether you are refining an existing production design or exploring a new topology, the same modeling environment handles the complete system, from powerflow layout and shift strategy through thermal management and NVH evaluation.

  • Can GT-SUITE model the hydraulic control system alongside the mechanical transmission?

Yes. GT-SUITE integrates hydraulic and mechanical modeling within a single simulation environment, so actuation system behavior, including clutch engagement, pressure regulation, and solenoid response, is captured in direct interaction with the mechanical drivetrain. This eliminates the approximations of separate co-simulation tools and provides more accurate predictions of shift quality and control system performance.

  • Is GT-SUITE suitable for developing and validating transmission control strategies?

Built for controls development, the platform supports real-time capable models for Model-in-the-Loop (MiL), Software-in-the-Loop (SiL), and Hardware-in-the-Loop (HiL) workflows. Control logic can be implemented using native control components in GT-SUITE, integrated with Simulink, or connected to external control systems, giving development teams the flexibility to validate strategies at every stage of the program.

  • Can GT-SUITE models be used for controls development and hardware-in-the-loop testing?

Real-time capable transmission models support Model-in-the-Loop (MiL), Software-in-the-Loop (SiL), and Hardware-in-the-Loop (HiL) workflows. In GT-SUITE, the same model used for system design and shift quality evaluation can be carried forward into controls validation, reducing the need to rebuild or simplify models at different stages of development.
