Application Engineer: Electric Motors

Gamma Technologies, LLC (GT) is looking for an Application Engineer: Electric Motors with a solid work ethic, excellent judgment, and a desire to build a long-term career with us.

Position Summary

We are looking for a creative, talented, and self-starting application engineer to join our Support and Applications Group to help our customers get the most out of our software and leverage the knowledge learned from these interactions to continuously improve our software. Gamma Technologies develops GT-SUITE and GT-FEMAG.  GT-SUITE is a sophisticated desktop software package for simulating almost any kind of multi-physics system, such as those arising in the automotive, aerospace, and other industries, involving fluid, thermal, mechanical, electromagnetics, chemical, and controls elements. GT-FEMAG provides additional 2D electromagnetic finite element models for the design and analysis of electric motors.  These tools also utilize a sophisticated set of user interfaces including built-in optimization and 3D pre-processing for CAD-to-model conversion.

Specifically, you would join our Electrical Applications team, which focuses on electric powertrains and energy storage devices.

Job Responsibilities

  • Assist customers in their use of our software to design and simulate electric motors, including electromagnetic design, motor controls, thermal security, and noise vibration and harshness (NVH) analysis
  • Use customer feedback and interaction to design and test new product features related to electric motors
  • Carry out proof-of-concept projects to demonstrate cutting-edge software solutions to prospective customers working on general electric motors, traction motors, and electric drive units
  • Interact with established and emerging automotive companies through training classes, conferences, and marketing events
  • Help evangelize the critical role Gamma Technologies plays in helping automotive companies on the Road to Zero Carbon
  • Opportunity for travel internationally, including Europe and occasionally Asia.

Education, Experience, and Skills

Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

  • Bachelors, Masters, or PhD Degree in Electrical Engineering or related fields is required.
  • Previous 2+ years of professional and/or graduate-level experience with electric motor design, analysis, and/or control
  • Experience with tools related to motors design and modeling, including but not limited to: FEMAG, JMAG, ANSYS Maxwell, Altair Flux etc.
  • Knowledge of basic motor types (PMSM, IPM, SPM, IM, and SRM), and control techniques (FOC, SVPWM/SPWM)

Additional Qualifications Desired

  • Experience in motor and drive systems of electric or hybrid electric vehicle (EV or HEV)
  • Experience in thermal analysis of motors and drives (both steady-state and transient)
  • Experience with NVH analysis of electric powertrains
  • Experience with inverter design and analysis, including modeling its effect on the NVH of an electric powertrain
  • Experience with modeling or analysis tools of electrical motors, drives, and their controls
